Musschia wollastonii (Red)
In 2006 I took the first picture below at Lammoran Gdns this our first ever sighting of the yellow Musschia wollastonii a few years later from seed we got one to flower. The colour for me was a little bland the flower itself was interesting but I wished for something with a stronger colour. So forward lots of years and Charlie Pridham said he had come across a red one at the same place that we had grabbed a few seeds at in Madeira. Another year passed and Charlie made his annual visit to the island but this time harvested a few seeds. He mentioned this on the forum and I begged and pleaded with him to send me some seeds which he kindly did. They did come up but all damped off and I lost the lot grrrr I again mentioned this on the forum and Martin Nicklin said his seeds had come up like cress so he sent me a couple of plants which I swapped for a spare red Iochroma I had a good result. Last year I believe Martin's flowered this year its my turn There are the two plants here which both have 2Mt high inflorescences of these fabulous looking red flowers. They have just started opening so I think a better show is on the cards in a few weeks time. Looking at stock photos on the interweb it seems the few red Musschia's growing all seem to originate from these plants in Madeira I hope it keeps seeding itself around. If the sun ever appears again I will pull the pots out and snap a few more pics when they are in full flow

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
Glad they did well for you Kev. I did have one survive the winter unprotected but moved house a couple of months back. Hope the new owner has kept it and is enjoying it ... and didn't root it out thinking it was a weed!

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
You should have plenty of your own seed now Kev! I must try again as Martin was telling me earlier this year about his success and its getting a bit embarrassing that I cant grow them

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
A few more shots now they are in full flow Compared with the yellow form the back of the leaves are startlingly different The plant to the left of shot is less red and some of the flowers have the yellow showing through I bet this is smallest flowering Musschia wollastonii you have ever seen. Luckily the main stem has to red off shoots growing on the stem so all is not lost for the future. Now what the chance of a red Musschia wollastonii with red leaves

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
Huge respect to you Kev!
I lost most of mine as tiny seedlings and even the one that got to be a 'plant' just faded away quite suddenly and without leaving [as Christopher Lloyd would have said] a suicide note.
Yours are most impressive.
Chad.

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
EDIT So moving on from the last post of August 2017 I have managed to keep both plants alive and one has new plants emerging from the base. They are both still flowering as they have been throughout winter in the greenhouses. No seed germination as yet though so not that clever

That Musschia is a real thing endeed! It looks like a frangipani from a distance, the plant, not the flowers! What species of caryota have you got on the second picture? Is it in the ground? I also see strelitzias and hedychiums? or alpinias?

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
Julio I have Caryota himalayana sadly we cannot grow this out side but I like the leaf shapes so I keep it in a pot.
Strelizia and Hedychium mostly in pots though a form called "Tara" is a standout plant growing outside with many blooms and 6ft + tall

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
Two posts in one day! Great pictures of Madiera, Charlie, in your recent post elsewhere. I grow the yellow version effectively and normally plant out at the first sign of a flowering shoot (ditto Echiums). Would love to have a go at the red one. Does anyone have any seed from this season? Happy to find something in return. What about M. aurea? Have not seen it offered.

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
You'll have to take next year off, Doug, after all this activity.
Nice to see you post - I am overdue a visit to your place by about 10 years, I reckon.

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
It is flowering again this year but not as prolific as last years fab plants the 2 suckers seen in some of the last few photos are just in flower now. I set all the seed/ gave it away last year with not a great deal of success by myself...note to self check the pots in the greenhouse! However I have noticed I have a few Musschia germinating in random pots of plants seems it just picks and chooses where it will germinate. I have quite a few growing in a pot of Chamaedorea metalica

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
Some pictures of the everlasting flowering Musschia this below is from 15 months ago The small plants you see in the shot have been flowering over the last few months so here is a shot from today One of the shoots is not flowering so it looks like I am good to go for another year.

Re: Musschia wollastonii (Red)
Kev, that's impressive.
Just to be clear: those are flowering side shoots on the same plant that flowered last year, not seedlings? I'd assumed this was a non-branching, monocarpic plant until I saw this.
