Re: Roscoea purpurea
Perhaps you have seen enough red flowered Roscoea purpurea for the moment, but I can't resist a few more. I visited Keith and Ros Wiley at Wildside Garden this morning and these are the red seedlings that Keith has named. Initially he started breeding to get a pure red flowered plant with purple leaves but he got such variety among the seedlings that he has named seven of them. He has selected for plants with broad labellums and most of them seem taller than average to me.

And a few pictures of the plants growing in the garden.

Since I was there, and you might be interested, here are a few pictures from the quite remarkable garden at Wildside.

Re: Roscoea purpurea
Hi John, my seedlings are about 3 inches tall now and growing fast. Tiny pseudostems, some pure green some slightly tinged. They will get darker as they develop. If they are pricked out into individual pots now there is a chance of some tiny flowers before the end of autumn.

Re: Roscoea purpurea
It's great to see wider shots of [Keith's] beautifully planted garden. I always feel we get way too many close-up photos of individual flowers here and not enough images of the way people's gardens look and feel.

Re: Roscoea purpurea
Not his garden David...
I must say £6.50 for a good plant in a 2lt pot is a bargain whether you are buying 1 or 200!
Keith has raised some superb plants there, though shame about the dull naming. He could have been a little more creative.

Re: Roscoea purpurea
John - Your red Roscoea purpurea seedlings are growing noticeably faster these days. Already one is showing red foliage, perhaps it will get even better. Shown are two pots of your many seedlings.
Thanks for the marvelous Roscoea pix and especially of the incredible Wiley garden.

Re: Roscoea purpurea
John - In recent days we had a remarkable growth spurt in the Roscoeas & I see 6 seedlings that could in time have red foliage. As well 10 with red stems, the latter are reminiscent of R. 'Spice Island' o.p. seedlings.

Re: Roscoea purpurea
I am always amazed by how fast they grow by the end of the season. Your plants are looking great, so I hope you get some good flower colours.

26c today and I am seeing a new growth spurt on the Roscoeas yet again. Fine weather for the next week.

Re: Roscoea purpurea
John - Despite no frost to date your R. purpurea seedlings finally died down this past weekend. Last night we transplanted the ones with chubby 1 inch+ tubers to single 4" deep pots, the small ones went into larger communal pots. I was quite amazed at how well they had developed underground despite having sprouted just 7 months ago. About 20 were showing red stem colouration; many had new roots just starting to show so the transplant was timely.
