coconut palms at Sydney RBG
I was astonished to see this last week in Sydney RBG. I went back today to take photos and I wasn't dreaming.
What are their long term prospect, I wonder? The average July temperature rang is 8c-16c

Phil, there was a post about these on IPS a few months back... they looked MUCH better then! The consensus seemed to be this was the worst possible cv. to try in Sydney, and their long term prospects were zero.

Re: coconut palms at Sydney RBG
Those are not going to suddenly pump out fronds once summer starts..they look a little too far gone. Maybe with a better variety that were planted out large like that would make it..do at least as well as the Newport Beach coconut that lived 18 years and would still be alive if it had been watered and not had the competition of a huge Washingtonia right next to it. I've read a couple of posts of Coconut in Sydney surviving- even trunking- in warmest micro-climates,near water and sheltered by buildings. Mostly they hate a long term chill. I noticed that having one in a unheated greenhouse that warmed on Hayward sun...the warm days were counteracted by the chill mornings in the winter of 40f's..it lived, stopped growing,I noticed that in its pot..it was getting a bit wobbly. When we got heat finally going in winter, that palms exploded with frond after frond getting larger in its 10 gallon pot. Mornings were now 65- 68f.
