Rhopalostylis chathamica "pitt island" - Growth so far
Hi there Just an update on the growth of my Pitt island Nikau's - I have not been very active on the forums lately due to multiple health issues in the family. I have 6-plants, which i bought 3-years ago as small 7cm x 7cm potted specimens. They have all been outdoor grown ( no hothouse ) and outside all through Winter. Here they are today. The photos below show the palms in PB6.5 bags which are the bags i planted them into out of the tiny 7cm pots. They will be potted up into PB18 bags this month.

Hi Albey, I was hoping to see an update on these. When you say they've been outside, is that exposed to frost? I bought 2 from a Dunedin supplier, reasonably large, who was selling on trade me. I had them under the shelter of a verandah, and some of the fronds, facing the open side, got frosted this winter. Which was disappointing, was hoping to plant them in the open. One was actually frosted before it was shipped to me, so the supplier gave me a smaller one as well. Which is the one in the photos
I don't have any temperature monitoring going on, did you get frosts as heavy as the previous winter? I felt as though there were a couple of bad ones.
Sorry to hear of the family health issues, never a fun time.

Hi Simon - i have just been looking at those photos of yours The palm that shows least damage - is that how it arrived from Dunedin ?
The photo that has the most damage - how long after did it take to go from that first photo to the damaged photo ?
Rod. ( I have a theory if i am right )

Hi Rod,
I'm in Richmond, pretty near Bealey/Fitzgerald corner. The pic in the photo is the smaller plant that was 'thrown in', due to damage to one of the bigger ones I ordered. This was their first winter with me, from memory I got them the previous spring. It was undamaged prior to this photo.
The first pic was taken 31 July, I'm thinking that night must have been after a pretty cold night, I was probably out looking for damage. The next pic was taken 3 weeks later, so it progressed to that stage somewhere in that time. It may have got to that stage earlier than the full 3 weeks, can't be sure.

Hi Simon I just checked my temp data archive and found this: On the 29th July at 10.00pm the temp started to drop below 0°c and remained below 0°c for 11-hours This is the night that damaged your Nikau. Here is the data below:
July 29th 09.00pm = +0.3 10.00pm = -0.2 11.00pm = -0.9 12.00am = -1.3 01.00am = -1.6 02.00am = -1.9 03.00am = -2.2 04.00am = -2.5 05.00am = -2.4 06.00am = -2.8 07.00am = -2.6 08.00am = -2.5 09.00am = -2.4 10.00am = +0.1
