Cyathea cunninghamii at the bottom of the gully getting swallowed up by pesky Canna Lilly things
A very dry slope round the side of the house lends itself well to xeric plants and palms.
This Nikau palm is thriving. It was just a tiny 2 litre seedling when I planted it 3 years ago.
Cyathea robusta

Re: Hello - been a while
Nice to see your garden in our winter Mark it gives me fresh impetus to plan for next year. Love your Pseudopanax are they ferox and trident?

Re: Hello - been a while
Hi Kev
Those Psedopanax are ferox and the green leaf one is called Cyril Watson so obviously some sort of hybrid.
Yes the ground is dry as a bone at the moment. It rained all winter. Every day for 6 months and then just in the last month it’s suddenly stopped raining, warmed up and there’s talk of a drought!

A few parenthood induced wrinkles now Kev but lifting tree fern trunks keeps me fit!

Re: Hello - been a while
This is what Christmas should be about. Not snow covered abies and red breasted robins, or feeling sorry for the less fortunate through the writings of Dickens....but a pictorial record of a kiwi garden

Re: Hello - been a while
Meryta sinclairii is a new native for me I’ve never tried before. A very distinctive tree with huge thick green leaves.
This is the biggest of 3 medullaris that I planted as Babies just 3 years ago. Nothing stopping them now.

Re: Hello - been a while
Mark that medullaris is already a sturdy one, in 7 years you have a small giant standing there

Re: Hello - been a while
The Meryta brings back sad memories I grew one from a 2 leafer to over 6ft tall. I used to move it to the kitchen when we had a hard freeze forecast -3c one winter turned out to be -8c........need I say more...never seen one for sale since! A nice specimen you have Mark and the Black tree fern looks immense
