Re: Schinus molle
That is magnificent! The trunk is totally awesome - never seen one as good. I wonder how long it will take my 'broomstick handle' trunked plant to get a little bit of character?

Re: Schinus molle
Many old tree's in this area Paul go back the old Nile's Nursery started around 1870. Same for the Ficus macrophylla I post every few years and the giant Wine palms..all a short drive from each other. There's even an old Kari tree...that old nursery is closed and I cant wander in to look at it like before. From the outside its blocked from view by many other old tree. This is the area to find old and unusual..

They are some old ones on the French Riviera but I've never seen one so big before. Thanks for sharing.

Every now and then I take a picture that ...looks a little artistic. I like how the sky's came out on this Cherimoya photo. ( a semi tropical fruit tree)

Re: Schinus molle
Big one, for sure! It must be well over 80 years old. Look at this in Andalucia. About 30 years old and in a true subtropical climate and well taken care of. It isn´t as big as yours.
This is mine. 20 years old in sandy soil. The vine is an Araujia sericofera with seed pods. I also have a 15 years old Schinus terebinthipholius.
These 3 are in a nearby town, loaded with seeds. they must be 15 years old
This one is also in sandy soil and well battered by the wind.

Re: Schinus molle
Did you know when Disneyland in Los Angeles was built in the mid 50's there was a shortage of large tropical plants in local nurserys. So,the Disney plantsman would saw large branches of off Pepper tree's in peoples yards ( for a price!) then stuck them in the ground on the Jungleland cruise. Some- or most- actually rooted in. Its legendary what they did to plant up Disneyland...craning in huge old Erythina's bought from neighbors. I saw photos of that.

Re: Schinus molle
Thanks Julrodmes, these spanish trees are nice but very far from the huge californian peper.
Stan : They probably have to plant regullarly these branches, but did Dysney plant living Schinus in the same time ?

Re: Schinus molle
You would think they would have brought in huge tree's...but the story went on to say they were only meant to be temporary until the Ficus and other tree's filled in. I was there in 2004..no Pepper tree's on the jungle cruise..Ficus macrophylla were huge.

Re: Schinus molle
Stan, I am impressed by the size of this Schinus molle. They grow quite well in the south of France where I used to live near Nice. But not to the size of San Francisco specimens. Maybe 4 to 5m max. I thought they were frost tender in the UK as I have never seen one in cultivation outside. But nice attractive ornamental trees. I would like to grow one, but fear the first cold snap of a British winter would kill it.

Re: Schinus molle
I planted one last year and it seems ok - there is a thermometer right next to it that registered -5.7C with overhead cover. Quite encouraging!

Re: Schinus molle
Saw this one today..
A little closer.
What is this you ask? Juniperus chinensis 'torrulosa' aka Hollywood Juniper when its allowed to be a tree and not hedge. They get these ladder like trunks.

Re: Schinus molle
Stan,
How old is this Schinus molle in the photos?. Never seen one with such a gnarled trunk. A fine specimen. They must like the californian climate.
