Fall in Fukuoka
Lots of fall color these days. Here are a few highlights in and around the hood.
A big Gingko biloba growing at a local shrine. These are without a doubt the best yellow colored leaves in fall.
A water basin carved out of a boulder at the same shrine.
Not to be out done, a nearby Acer palmatum was doing its thing too.
Both delicious and beautiful to look at, Diospyros kaki.
And all the Dahlia imperialis are in full flower now. Impressive.
And the seed heads of Miscanthus sinensis look fantastic in the sun.
Fall is fun! But then comes winter...

Great photos Tom, they should be in the main forum. It's nice to imagine that warm autumn sun, it's been about a month since we've seen the yello orb for more than a couple of hours.
I do miss the delicious kaki fruit that you used to get in London markets in autumn. They have been replaced by the horrible "Sharon Fruit", which travels better, because it never properly ripens
We are beginning to see fields of Miscanthus sacchariflorus (Elephant Grass) in Ireland, grown as a biofuel. It will be interesting to see what wildlife adapts to them, they should be quite a good habitat. A link:

Michael,
Thanks for the comments.
The warm autumn sun is very fickle, coming out now and again, with a handful of days truly sunny, but most, err, to say the least, are 90% cloudy. The day I took these pics was indeed brilliant. I never know where to post pics of this sort since strictly speaking these are not about gardening. Kaki is still a part of Japanese culture, but as the younger generations get hooked to the likes of Dominos, Mister Donut, McDonalds, and KFC, its popularity is falling year by year. Believe it or not, even fish consumption IS DOWN compared to say a couple decades ago. Remember that old, horrible song by The Vapors back in the 70's, "I Think I'm Turning Japanese"? Well, the shoe is on the other foot now...

I noticed a big increase in the amount of junk food and dairy products that people in Japan were eating, beween our visits in 2002 and 2007. People seemed to find me extolling the virtues of tofu and seaweed (I am a long-time vegan) very amusing!
Another funny incident was when we went out for an Indian meal with our Japanese hosts. After a hot curry, one of our hosts was sweating profusely, something the others found hilarious. I think there were a lot of jokes about him "sweating like a foreigner", although these were not translated for us!
