MISSION STATEMENT & FORUM RULES
WELCOME
Hello, and thanks for joining us. This is a discussion board for dedicated plantspeople and beginners alike, to get together and talk about plants and gardens. The focus is particularly on exotic, offbeat, rare or unusual plants, and its also about pushing boundaries of various kinds with respect to gardening - climatic zones, style, taste - hence the name. Its all about about passion for, and delight in plants and gardens. The .net suffix of the domain name is to emphasise that this is a net community and not restricted to any particular part of the globe.
SUBJECT AREAS OF EACH FORUM
On the Edge The main forum, for general discussion of anything garden or plant-related you want to bring up.
Swapping and Shopping A forum specially for offers of plants to give away or swap, advice on sourcing plants from commercial outlets, sales and special offers on, and promotional postings by commercial nurseries.
Board Admin and configuration For anything to do with the running of the board, software configuration, suggestions, problems.
PHOTO GALLERIES
This board has an associated pbase subdomain in which photographs of members own gardens, and gardens and other places they have visited featuring exotic or unusual plants are displayed. It can be conveniently accessed via the top menu-bar: click on "The Edge Galleries". It is divided by broad climatic zone and then into members private gardens and public gardens and spaces. Members of the board are welcome to construct a gallery of photographs of their own gardens. For details how to go about it, please approach board moderator Dave Bindon.
GUIDELINES FOR POSTING TO THIS BOARD
This board exists for the enjoyment and benefit of all members, and is also viewable by the whole internet community. Whether we agree on specifics or not, we are all here because we are interested in exotic, rare or offbeat plants and gardens, and the board depends on mutual respect for and by all posters. The guidelines and rules presented below tell you what is expected of you as a condition for participating in the Board, and what you can expect from other participants. They are not there to stifle discussion, but to provide a good user experience for members. By registering and logging in you agree to follow these user guidelines.
Civility Keep it courteous and respectful. It is a universal truth that in any facet of your life, you are liable to encounter people whose opinions or manner you find irritating, and that applies here as much as anywhere. However, in your own as much as everyone elses interests, we ask you to refrain from insulting, abusing or threatening anyone, whether a member of the board or not, either in the public fora or by PM. If you feel that someone has crossed the line and insulted you, please contact one of the moderators via private message or e-mail, rather than trying to retaliate by placing scathing posts in the forum or flaming them with pms.
Language This is an international, public, English-language forum. To ensure that the whole readership can understand what you write, please always use standard, good English so far as you are able. Occasional foreign language borrow-words are okay, but please refrain from use of text-message abbreviations in particular as they will not be understood by many.
Plant Names Latin plant names are universal, and (intentionally, at least) reliably unambiguous. Because the whole board is searchable, and can be used as a source of reference, it is fairly important that the full names of plants being discussed occur at least somewhere in a thread, even if it gets abbreviated later on due to frequent re-referencing. So if you introduce a plant into a thread, please use its proper Latin name to start off with, if you know it.
Copyright Do not post material that breaches others copyright here. It is within the law to post small, relevant quotes, but not whole passages from newspapers, magazines, books, etc. If you want to reference material somewhere else on the web, give a brief summary and link to the rest. People can go take a look at what you are talking about and then return to discuss it further.
Contentious Content Keep it relevant. The board exists first and foremost to discuss plants and gardening. Please do not begin or contribute to a contentious topic (e.g. on politics, sex, race or religion) likely to incite or fuel a flame war.
Disruptive Behaviour The moderators and administrators reserve the right to take action against a poster who is disrupting the normal flow of the board. This includes violations listed in the other rules - but may also include behaviour we have not yet foreseen. Since this rule is perforce general, we will attempt to correct the problem by warning the violator (via PM, email, or posting in the thread) and giving him/her a chance to explain his/her behaviour, and we will take further action only if proven necessary. Posters who violate these guidelines may find they are either requested by a moderator to conform to the guidelines within a thread, or by PM, depending on the nature of the problem. In the case of a second violation, depending upon the severity, the moderators/administrators will issue a more stern warning by PM, or they may ban you temporarily (for a few days), or they may delete your account and permanently ban you.
Reporting Bad Posts If you feel a post breaks one of these rules, please bring it to the attention of a moderator or administrator by pm. All reported posts are reviewed by moderators or administrators, and are treated very seriously (so do not report frivolously). If you have concerns, please PM a moderator or administrator. If you disagree with a moderator action, then PM or email the moderator, or an administrator. We will review the case and take action as needed.
