Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
Well, its a bit warmer then Hayward. 79 and 58f to Haywards warmest months of 75 and 58f. I'm inland city,so give me at least a couple of degrees more . In winter,I see Melbourne's coldest day of the month is 55f and 42f... Hayward's 56 and 42f. I just found a new site for weather called weathersparkcom. They even have a stat for comfortable days of the year..Hayward has 30% of them between 65f and 75f..Melbourne 27% of the same. Hayward has nowhere near the blazing hot streaks of Melbourne..no 110f here that's for sure. And I did see that Melbourne avoids the arctic freezes we get And why Jade plant there can be a real 9' compared to our very best at 6' (bigger in frost free Oakland though at 7'). But I wonder still if Foxtails and Royals are growing in Melbourne? I had to edit as I misread coldest day as months average.

Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
Albey,
I guess our climate is similar to yours. We grow an Arenga for years, probably in too shady a place. It is doing well, but it is true that the growth rate is pretty slow. A beautiful palm though.

Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
Here's a better comparison from August 22nd to December 10th Just had a proper measure this time with a tape measure - the actual growth on this spear is: 14cm not 10cm as previously posted.
August 22nd
December 10th

Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
I bought one this, it's potted and seems to like where it is, in a sheltered spot, dappled shade. It will be kept in a heated greenhouse over winter and brought out for the summer. I am at present developing an area in the garden that will be covered and heated over winter where half hardy plants, such as this, can be planted in the ground. Time will tell if this is the way to go.

Re: NEWLY Planted Arenga Engleri
how is that plant doing now, a few years down the track? my little one lost its leaves in it's 2 winters but grows one or 2 new ones. not highly satisfactory as a garden plant.
