Post Re: Sydney weather
November has turned out to be a wet and stormy month. There was even a confirmed tornado in the northern Sydney suburb of Hornsby.
Today there was a tornado up in the Northern Tablelands, about 500 km north of me. How often do you see this in Australia?

We had our first heatwave on Saturday when it reached 40c in the western suburbs (33c at Observatory Hill), followed by a more humid 38c on Monday (28c at Observatory Hill).
This was the tailend of the heatwave which affected the Third Test in Perth. These events usually travel west to east across the continent.

Sydney's temps have been moderate, but the inland is another story. Many centres in the outback of SA, Qld and NSW have recorded maximums of 47c to 49c over the last couple of days.
Today Walgett in northern inland NSW exceeded 49c. Tomorrow the heat will shift further east and Brisbane is expecting 41c.

A major heatwave is set to cross southern Australia over the next week, perhaps of record proportions.
Perth will have 44c tomorrow and 40c on Sunday
Adelaide will have from Monday to Friday 40c, 41c, 41c, 43c and 40c
Melbourne will have from Tuesday to Friday 41c, 39c, 38c and 39c
Sydney will largely escape due to east coast seabreezes.

When the heat moves across the bottom of the continent the monsoon usually becomes very active across the top, as well as cyclones.

We had a beaut thunderstorm yesterday with hail that went on for about 10 minutes. It was generally larger than pea-sized, almost up to marble-size.
January was the driest since 1987, but from mid-Feb onwards the humidity has really picked up.

A man drowned in a stormwater drain yesterday as Sydney was hit with torrential rain- up to 70mm in an hour fell in some southern suburbs and one location had 297mm in 24 hours. Observatory Hill only had 7mm, which indicates the storms were hit-and-miss.

I was driving through the Blue Mountains yesterday evening when I saw what looked like a curtain or veil across the road about 100 metres ahead. Mist perhaps?
Well, it was rain; lashings of it. I don't think I've ever seen such an abrupt edge to a rain storm. It was like driving into a waterfall.

We are having quite an Indian summer: 15 consecutive days above 22c, which is a record for May. And there are more to come.

Winter arrived with a blast today, with a lot of power outages due to high winds, but luckily not for me (yet). Melbourne suffered even worse conditions, and blizzards engulfed the Snowy Mountains.

Tomorrow is forecast to be 25c; could it nudge the July reord of 25.9c?
After that, another cold front barrels through with snow to 600m asl.

It was only 5.5c in Sydney this morning, which was the coldest temperature in 4 years. Some western suburbs went below freezing, although it's not the first time this has happended this winter.
