Re: Raising tree ferns from spores
Here is a little update on my young tree ferns, first the seeded C. intermedia what I fear will not be the species, it does have created a nice slender trunk and huge frond this year I put it in the cold greenhouse for the first time, he is big enough now,
The New Caledonian species grown very hard, a problem next year, do not have a good place where it can grow properly and unlimited,
The C.atrox also goes like a rocket, beautiful tree fern with beautiful glossy leaves,
The C. lepifera grown quite nice not too big,
I have find a good windless place to for the C spinulosa and C.viellardii and D. blumei that have grown well this year, the small trunk comes up at every tree fern now,
Gr. Eduard.

Love the hairs on D. blumei especially. You are a consummate TF grower Eduard. I can say without any flattery intended that your plants look perfect - literally.

Re: Raising tree ferns from spores
Cracking selection of ferns. D.blumei is a beauty, even redder than the D. youngiae?

Re: Raising tree ferns from spores
Thanks guys, Chris I think the D. youngiae's is more brown / red, and D.blumei to orange / red, find it along with the C.spinulosa, the most distinctive tree fern species that I have Saw the D. blumei the first time in 2009 at a German tree fern grower and was immediately in love! Gr. Eduard.

Hi Eduard,
It's time to update again the gemination of the two species, it's strange, why the cooperii is growing so slow compared to the glauca? Is only the density that leads to the difference?
And here is Steve's dark unknown Sphaeropteris spp. update

Re: Raising tree ferns from spores
I think that this is the case, if you sow too close the growth rate is limited, I had the C.atrox also sow too close to, the C robusta is well sown and grew better now.
- Mau unfortunately I have all the baby tree ferns C. spinulosa sold to Ro 2 years ago +-60 young plants!
- Chris D. blumei is very difficult to find, I can not help you, you'll have to ask private tree fern growers.
Gr. Eduard.

Re: Raising tree ferns from spores
Hi Peter, that they stagnate is quite normal after two weeks they grow or die you are now in good time "spring" I never work with heat mats, the soil get warmer than the air above it, I know some people do it here but in nature air above the plant is always warmer than the ground on places where no sun comes, now in the autumn / winter, everything here stand in the house [tree fern cultivation], temperatures vary widely, but always between 17 and 24ºC, I did worked in 2009 with a heating cable because the whole was briefly at the window, see photo on page one, when it froze that winter almost -20ºC. I transplanting when they are bigger than Mark and Ro does, each his own way of course, I find them too fragile as they are so small, and wait until they can be drawn from the medium with my fingers, otherwise should that with a tweezers and that is often going wrong here! [they break] further I wait until I see roots below the sowing medium then the plants are strong enough to harden, which means you put the cover of the incubater slightly open so that the air get a bit dryer, in the closed state that is nearly 100% humidity. This you leave a few weeks and then if they grow out here it's time to pot them, they can then put to a sheltered place outside always moist. I think your plants need to grow certain 6a8 weeks until they are as far, if you do not have a conservatory put them in a large incubator, success. Gr. Eduard.

Re: Raising tree ferns from spores
Hi Eduard,
I will wait a few weeks, the ones that didn't make it died within a couple of days. The 1 C. Mexicana is doing nothing, not dead but not growing, has been like this for a month. (strange).
I put a level of about a 1cm of water in the propagator, so as to not cook them, especially when the temps hit high 20's in the house or in case the heat mat and thermostat fail. I make sure temps are +- 25c.
I have a few where roots growing out above the pot, I am assuming these should be re-potted?
Thanks for the tips.

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Hi Peter, water on the bottom is not good as it makes contact with roots or soil, root rot may occur, then the roots grow upwards or die, the root ball should be moist not wet, I pour the excess water from the propegator, the growing up's I would replant with caution. At higher temperatures, you will need to check more often, tree fern cultivate is not difficult but you always keep an eye on everything.
Gr. Eduard.

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Hi Eduard,
Really appreciate your advice, thank you. My last C Mexicana is dying. However I have a few other species not mentioned brewing, the waiting game. So far it's been hit and miss.
Appreciate your help.

Re: Tree ferns from spores
Hi, here the last results of my tree fern spores grow,
the C.atrox var. atrox spores I had from Boris, they were the fastest and are powerful spores that other infected, so many atrox!
They are also going to grow much faster from a palm clod!
For a friend I have grown one box C.robusta,
and some other species such as Blechnum, B.articulatum and B.wurunuran B.wattsii and doodia australis,
Gr. Eduard.
