Re: Bismarckia nobilis seedling
How old is it? I'd love to take a stab at one of these, but all I need is another large plant in a pot to look after!

Re: Bismarckia nobilis seedling
I've seen them grown in an office atrium...lots of light but no greenhouse by comparison. I think this is a palm that might make a surprise houseplant--next to a BIG sunny window...and be happy in summer outdoors. They do fine in pots. The only other silver palm that also does well in pots forever is the silver Med Palm. There are more..but that might be the hardiest.

Re: Bismarckia nobilis seedling
On Garden Web's Cycad and Palm forum...There is a person growing for a few years now a Bismarckia- in Minnesota . Out in summer,in from November to April I think he said it was. Its simply by a average sized window all winter to boot. With photos to prove it. What did I tell you?

Re: Bismarckia nobilis seedling
So,your advice to him is- toss it out? Minnesota's summers are so short the time spent indoors must range up to three months longer then the UK. I've seen them as indoor plants. Bizz are incredibly hardy palms for everything but broken roots. They take the blazing heat of Death Valley to the lack of warmth San Francisco. Growth becomes a crawl- but in a pot doesn't matter. Cichlid reminds me of an old post on the 'edge of a UKer who had a potted Dragon tree, D.draco. It looked great in a pot.

Re: Bismarckia nobilis seedling
i think mine is doing well under the circumstances. Its pushing up its third strap leaf, taken nearly a month forvthis new leaf to grow about 4 inches which is slow but nice to see it moving. I appreciate it needs heat but judging by the temperatures it is currently growing in I don't think the 30 celcius mark quoted by some people is necessary for growth, unless they just meant good growth?
My bismarckia usually stays around 16-25elcius. On occasions its hit 30 when I have forgot to ventilate, but not often. It gets some sun in summer from the window, the rest of the time it gets some daylight, supported with a small flourescent light. So perhaps outdoors for a short time in summer may be OK.

Re: Bismarckia nobilis seedling
Update on bismarckia seedling, growing well. If anything it seems to be growing better being less protected and left near a mostly open window.

Re: Bismarckia nobilis seedling
They are the only palms which have grabbed my attention (sorry, palm lovers!). Thoroughly beautiful and worth the effort needed to keep them alive and well, I would imagine.
